If you’ve followed my blog for a while, then you’ll know that sleeping has been a bit of an issue for us for approximately 3 years and 9 months. Can you guess how long we’ve been parents for…? One thing that does help when it comes to getting both Toby and Martha to sleep, is a consistent bedtime routine. They may not stay asleep for the 12 hours we daydream about, but on the whole both children are actually really good at going to bed in the first place.
The BookTrust’s Bath, Book, Bed campaign is now in its third year, giving parents simple and effective ways to help ease many common bedtime challenges with our mini people. In association with Jo Frost and Daddy Pig, the website has loads of fantastic advice and free downloadable resources, as well as their recommendations of brilliant bedtime story books.
To celebrate the campaign, BookTrust will be sharing tips and stories with parents in a Twitter Party on Wednesday, 11 April between 8 and 9pm.
Bath, Bed, Book
Toby and Martha both love the bath, so they splash around and play games with the bubbles. I always try to buy organic bubble baths that are suitable for Toby’s delicate skin, and which have a nice soothing natural scent like lavender.
Once they’re dried and into their PJs we’ll often read a story together on the sofa while they have some warm milk, then it’s bed time! For Toby, this means one or two books followed by a pretend story, then we say our goodnights and ‘I love you’s and he curls up to go to sleep.
As Toby gets older, he’s more and more interested in crafty activities. Whereas previously he couldn’t have cared less, he now enjoys creating things on a theme, and will revisit the activities repeatedly. Recently, we’ve been doing some art and craft activities around the pretend stories Toby loves to make up with us after his two books at bedtime. These pretend stories have become a nightly tradition now, and often include creatures from dinosaurs to cats, and locations from the forest to the moon!
Toby decided to tell a story about him visiting the jungle, so we thought that we would make a jungle scene and some characters to help tell the story:
Toby and his friend Flowery took Donkey and Rudolph (Toby’s favourite teddies) to the jungle, where they explored the plants and flowers, met the amazing animals, and went on an adventure to find a magical rainbow bird.
They found an elephant who told them they needed to follow the glittery trail. This took them to a butterfly who sprinkled magic potion over them and suddenly they could fly! They flew over the trees, then suddenly they saw rainbow colours between the jungle trees. They landed and slowly walked towards the colours and found the rainbow bird!
Toby, Flowery, Donkey and Rudolph climbed on to the bird’s feathery back and together they flew across the whole jungle, then over the ocean, the seaside, and finally landed at Toby’s house! The rainbow bird had dinner at Toby’s house (it liked ham and cheese toasties with cucumber), and then it said goodbye and flew back to the jungle. Toby and Flowery told Mummy and Daddy about their big adventure, then it was time to go to bed until the sun came up.
