Welcome to day 26 and the final day of this year’s A to Z Challenge! I wrote about why I chose ‘Self Care’ as my theme for the challenge and I’m really enjoying writing about it during April. Today’s letter is ‘Z’ so my self care word is ‘Zest’.

Our time on this earth is fairly short in the grand scheme of things and we spend a heck of a lot of that time working, sleeping, doing chores and other things that aren’t really our first choices. For me, having a zest for life comes through using the other time that you have available to live in a way that makes you happy.

It’s not always easy, heck I’d love to go on 4 holidays a year, eat out most nights, be an amazing baker, own a few sheep, drive a supercar and still be Phil’s wife and Toby and Baby Girl’s mummy, but that’s not reality! If you get hung up on what you can’t have then you may miss out on what you can have.

Phil and I got on date nights when we can, we enjoy gigs, we go on walks in the countryside, we travel when possible and we laugh together. Even when life gets tough, we can still have a laugh and instantly there’s a renewed zest in how we feel. Yes we get stressed and grumpy, but at some point in our day to day lives together we will laugh. Nobody makes me feel zestier about life than my husband!

Likewise for those of us with children, at times it can feel like a never ending cycle of nappies, crying, sleep deprivation, mess and toddler groups but is there anything as amazing as seeing a child have a new experience or learn a new skill? It’s the best thing in the world!

I’ve spoken before about life giving us all lemons at times and it sure does, but lemons aren’t all bad. I personally love lemon juice and why not look at the ones you may have been given, chuck the sourness away and grab the zest instead?!

What gives you a zest for life? Let me know in the comments below or get in touch on Facebook or Twitter.

By the way, I actually cannot believe I managed to complete the #AtoZChallenge, blogging every single day in April except Sundays, using each letter of the alphabet and even sticking to my self care theme… All whilst due a baby who still hasn’t shown up! High fives anyone? Anyone…?
